Education

Some of the young people who are placed at Signpost have missed large parts of their education and find a classroom setting uncomfortable. Because of this, the care staff from Signpost play a lead role in supporting individuals when they first attend their educational placements. 

Signpost works closely with the Exeter Royal Academy For Deaf Education and also with other local specialist education providers to ensure young people's educational needs are met. 

The Education Establishment that is accessed by each young person will depend on their individual needs and abilities. On occassion, an Education provider will work with Signpost to facilitate initial education support to a young person at one of the residential homes.  Rooms and resources have been especially set aside and adapted for this purpose. 

Home education is only arranged when the young person cannot manage a few hours in a formal classroom setting. The aim is to gradually introduce education to the young person whilst, at the same time, allowing them to take control of their own behaviours. This ultimately leads to full-time attendance at an appropriate establishment without the need of a bespoke support worker.
